Week in Review

Did you know I have a little Appaloosa family? They are not Breyer models, they are little plastic guys I've been collecting since I got back into horses and acquired an Appy, specifically.

This one is my favorite.

Probably because he has a big spotted hiney like My Boy.

This is the book I'm currently reading. A librarian friend suggested it. This book is geared towards late elementary-aged children. Amazon.com has this write-up which is probably a better description than I could muster: Anyone who fondly remembers how the fresh air of the moors puts a blush in the cheeks of sallow young Mary in "The Secret Garden" will love Dorothy Canfield Fisher's "Understood Betsy" just as much. First published in 1916, this engaging classic tells the tale of a thin, pale 9-year-old orphan named Elizabeth Ann who is whisked away from her city home and relocated to a Vermont farm where her cousins, the "dreaded Putneys," live. The Putneys are not as bad as her doting, high-strung Aunt Frances warns, however, and Elizabeth, who had been nurtured by her aunt like an overwatered sapling--positively blooms under their breezy, earthy care.

Like many novels geared towards young children, I think this one is a story even adults can enjoy.

I looked at my calendar last night and noticed this. I guess I am really hoping for spring?

In my defense, I had the calendar off the wall trying to schedule a farrier appointment in March. Really!

This is my new regular breakfast food. Any guesses as to what it is? It's called quinoa (keen-wah. I just discovered that I have been pronouncing it wrong.) My dad told me about it. The Incas considered it sacred. You can find it in bulk in most health food groceries. It is the seed from some plant and supposedly is full of the 9 essential amino acids, protein, iron, lysine, magnesium, and loads of other great stuff. It is supposed to help with your blood vessel constriction and people who suffer with migraines. I ate it every day a week ago and still got a migraine. But some things are unavoidable. The grain is kind of nutty and crunchy in texture when cooked. I coat mine in brown sugar and milk, like malt-o-meal. Just don't look at it up close once it is cooked, it kind of looks strange.

I ordered this DVD! It is Lonesome Dove, the television series. I guess it aired for two seasons. I was skeptical but the reviews online were good and I am so addicted to these characters I had to give it a go. Seriously, I'm going to name my next pet Woodrow.

This morning I visited the salon and got my hair colored, hallelujah! Nothing brightens your mood then a bit o' blonde in the dead of winter. I mean really, there was a lot of gray around here and it wasn't just the clouds in the sky, people!

Not my salon, just thought this one looked kind of homey! Wait, are those zebra print chairs? What do you know!

Tonight it's drinks with friends and tomorrow I see my horse. So I am a happy camper!

  2. I read that book a-waay back when I was a kid and loved it. To this day, I love reading the Little Women series, and LOVE the Winona Ryder version of the movie.

  3. Ha ha ha You silly girl! Grey not only in the clouds! Well I have a little Appaloosa horse collection myself. I will have to post it for you sometime. I did a post today with your ottoman in it (not yours, but one I know you would want for yours). Funny thing else, I always thought about the name Augustus...but Woodrow is good too! :) Gus is so cool!
I get migraines too and I sympathize with you. I will have to give that stuff a go, I don't get them as often as I used to, since I got spayed! :)

  4. {K.T.}~ Well I like Gus' character better myself, but Woodrow seemed cute for a dog. I might just have to get TWO dogs and have a Gus and a Woodrow! ;)

I finally have some migraine meds that work fairly well, but I really can't seem to kick them for good.

  6. Hi there! I really like that collection of yours....there's something special about appy's. Mine had a bay undercoat with loud spots over his hiney too! Dusty Buster was his name, he was my best bud...only took one spill off him. I wasn't suppose to run him home up the lane but guess what, I didn't listen. My foot got stuck in the stirrup and I got dragged a few feet. No stitches or anything just cuts and bruises mainly but I did miss school the next day and my mom was mad! I got grounded for it and never did it again. Can't tame us wild ones! Whew! HOO! Well, I'm not so brave anymore, not at age 48, yup be 49 this spring. Horses keep me young.....at heart anyway!LOL!

  15. Hello there! What a cool looking blog you have! I love your riding philosophy -- it is just like mine! And like you, I tend to spoil my horse a bit, but she is a great trail horse, and I know she trusts me. I do not care for the heavy-handed-force-them-to-obey style of riding...I, too, let my girl find her way with gentle direction. Am looking forward to reading more of your blog, and hope you have time to visit mine once in a while -- horsetalkindiana.blogspot.com

  17. I like your collection. I have never heard of Understood Betsy, sounds like a good read though. I also have never heard of quinoa, it sure sounds like it would be good for you but it doesn't look very appetizing. Enjoy your drinks and your day with your boy.

  19. love the appy collection! I used to have all KINDS of horses growing up. But where I'm living right now I just dont have the room for the nick nacks, etc. Nore the storage space. So I guess I'll have to start collecting all over again once I can get a bigger place of my own. Enjoy the videos once they come in!

  20. I suffer from Migraine Headaches as well, but have been able to control them without medication.

Have you ever kept a "headache diary"? Keeping track of when you get your headaches is a good start to finding the trigger that is causing them. Some women have monthly headaches, which points to hormones. Some of us have obvious triggers. (I'm allergice to chlorine)

Maybe keeping a journal will help you to find your trigger? Good luck.

  21. That looks like a book I would like to have in my library. I like your horsey collection. I started one for my grandson, now that I am going to have a granddaughter, I am going to start one for her.
As to the hair, I have to wait for the sun a little more, I just spray mine with sun-in to get a little more blonde coming out... smiles!
