Have you seen the February/March issue of American Cowboy magazine? I was at the store last night and I couldn't believe my eyes! It's especially coincidental because I had just picked up the "Comanche Moon" DVD, the television series prequel to Lonesome Dove. I have yet to watch any of the Lonesome Dove sequels. I am still savoring the original. I feel guilty watching the sequels.
Now I realize that "Comanche Moon" doesn't star Robert Duvall nor Tommy Lee Jones and nobody can play Gus or Woodrow like they can. But I have to give it a chance because I'm just so addicted to their characters and their adventures in the wild west. What do you think? Were any of the sequels any good? (The Streets of Laredo, Deadman's Walk.)
I won't give away the article, but it is strangely ironic to me that the 20th Anniversary of the television mini-series is this February. That is because it is also the one-year anniversary since I first saw Lonesome Dove. I was introduced to it one year ago February, while visiting my Auntie J in the desert.
Speaking of my Auntie J, do you remember the post I wrote, in my second month of blogging, about how she met Robert Duvall in person? Seems appropriate that I link it here now because it is such a cute story. That being said, stories like that are the whole reason I encouraged my aunt to start up a blog of her own, which she has finally done (you can find her on my sidebar, the Ms. Desert Rose.)
This February I will not be making my annual trip to the desert (sob sob, sniff sniff) so I will have to re-watch the miniseries as a tribute to my great desert adventures.
With that I leave you with one of Gus McCrae's bits of philosophy from the movie:

Pictured below is my first desert ride on a Tennessee Walker~
what fun, I was grinning from ear to ear!
With that I leave you with one of Gus McCrae's bits of philosophy from the movie:
“If you want only one thing too much, it’s likely to turn out a disappointment. The only healthy way to live, as I see it, is to learn to like all the little everyday things.”
p.s. I just saw that the Hallmark Channel is running a wild western weekend....and premiering a movie called "Unforgiven" starring Clint Eastwood and Morgan Freeman tonight. In case anyone is staying in and has popcorn!
I saw that magazine on Thursday and thought of you. I haven't seen any of the sequels either.
ReplyDeleteI've seen the original, all the sequels, there was even a short-run tv series for awhile. Nothing compares to the book, though the book is even better after you've watched the original miniseries, because you can hear Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones in the words. I've read the book probably every other year since the miniseries aired, and it's next up on my purchase list from audible.com. Yeah, I guess you could say I'm a little obsessed with it all.
ReplyDeleteI have not watched the sequels either. I think he is one of the best actors alive. He has played some of the best characters from Boo Radley to Hub. I have not seen any of his other movies since, Secondhand Lions. There a two movies that I will watch over and over and never get tired of them American President and Secondhand Lions. He has a movie in post-production right now, The Road. I wonder what is about?
ReplyDeleteAwww...I was hoping it was going to be My Boy on the cover!
ReplyDeleteVery wise quote.
Nope, haven't seen the sequels either...but I headed right over to NetFlix and put both of them in the queue along with Comanche Moon...that will make some great movie nights at our house!
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting!!
Cool picture of you on the gaited horse.
ReplyDeleteLove the pics, and lonesome dove is my favorite book ever! The movie is one of the best, too. . .
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen the other two, but I read them, and they were pretty darn good, but not quite as good as lonesome dove. Enjoy them!
Also, great quote.
Robert Duvall is one of my favorite actors. EVER. He is hawt. I've seen comanche moon- not as good as the original Lonesome Dove. I've yet to read the book, but it's here, about 3rd in line on my to read list. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDelete{Gttyup~ Let us know what you think after you watch them!
ReplyDeleteAng I'm glad to hear I'm not the only obsessed one! But I haven't read the book, either! What a great idea....to add to my pile of 20 books to read! ;) I obviously spend more time blogging and watching movies these days.....}
I hope you aren't too disappointed, but nothing is better than the book. I've read it seven times and I can't get enough. If you like it, I'd like to know why!
ReplyDeletewould just like to tell you how beautiful your horse is! X
ReplyDeleteI love Gus, I named my yellow lab after him. I miss him so much, he passed away last October.
ReplyDeleteOH I love love love him!! When I think of Cowboy movies I think of him!!
ReplyDeleteAnd I would love to ride a horse on a desert ride like that!! How much fun!! Great picture too. I would be smiling from ear to ear as well!!
I haven't seen any of these but I wish I had. Seems like every time it was on I had some kind of emergency at the barn, or a meeting or something to do with the horses. But I sure wish I had seen it. I have heard such great things about the series.
ReplyDeleteAs it so happens...Bobby Duvall and I were just talking last year about your movie pick tonight. He said it does not hold a candle to Lonesome Dove, but that the one he had just finished filming was gonna be good! Maybe that's the one that was mentioned???
ReplyDeleteYour Desert Rose Auntie!
That Tennessee Walker you were riding was MINE!
ReplyDeleteI was very kind to loan him to you! I will miss him this year. He was so much fun to ride.
I will see the movies when you bring them to me. I barely remember Lonesome Dove so bring that one as well.
{Lisa}~ Sorry to hear about your Gus, cute name!
ReplyDelete{Vacquero Girl}~ Ok, now I swear I'm ordering the book first thing tomorrow! ;)
{Hi Kylie}~ I will pass along your compliments to my spotted boy!
{Paint Girl}~ You barely remember Lonesome Dove because you kept falling asleep! You are not a true fan yet. True fans hold out for the end, even if it's 1:30 in the morning and they've been riding in the hot desert sun and drinking lemonade all day!
{Desert Rose}~ I am actually finding Comanche Moon to be rather enjoyable, albeit not as good as Lonesome Dove, of course. I will say that seeing Duvall and TLJ first in LD has helped me better "get" these characters in CM, as they are portrayed younger and by different actors. It is also interesting to get the background on Clara, Maggie, Newt, and the town of Lonesome Dove itself.
absolutely loved that series... have the cd's and all
ReplyDeletehappy snowed in again trails!
