Who Is This Pony Girl?

If someone was to describe me, they probably say I'm eclectic. You can't pigeon-hole me. I don't fit in any molds. I like that about myself.

I have called myself a small-town-city-girl with a cowgirl heart. Or a cowgirl with a city girl vibe who wants to live in a small town again. Whatever. I may be frequently coated in dirt and actually like the smell of horse sweat, but I also love having a fabulous hairdo and wearing a great pair of designer jeans and heels. I have an appreciation for art, culture, and the finer things in life. But given a choice, I'd rather live in a rustic log cabin next to a horse corral.

I have worn these 1960's vintage stilettos on an uneven cobblestone street in Greenwich Village in New York City, just because it was NYC and I wanted to.

I am comfortable in these boots. But not only because they are physically cushy, but because when I wear them, I am emotionally connected to the world of horses, which is so dear to my heart.

I love this horse. Stocky, western, the history of the spotted hide. A little Wyoming, a little Montana. A little lemonade and fried chicken.

I also love this horse. Flashy, refined, spirited energy. A little upstate New York with champagne and brie.

I love this duo. They are down-home, heartfelt, twangy, and simple.

But I also love this band from the UK. They are soulful, electronic, and modern.

How can one be a little bit of everything and all of nothing? Am I walking a tightrope between two worlds? Could it mean I might be confused, or don't know who I am?

Interestingly, I personally have never been more clear about who I am and what I want. In the past two years, I have learned more about myself through my re-entry into the world of horses. As I have blogged about this journey, I have discovered that like me, my blogging has changed a little, grown a lot, and now more honestly reflects who I am. From being a girly-girl and sharing my favorite western attire, to grooming caked mud off my hairy horse and checking his sarcoid scab.

Thank you for letting me share all these different sides of myself with you.....

  1. You kind of remind me a little of me, except without the city girl part... I wouldn't wear stilletos. ;) But I like being different... Contrasty... Eclectic. No we're not confused, just embracing both sides of who we are. :D Great post!

  2. I can completely relate to being a little city and country at the same time. I long for many aspects of city living, and have often considered moving there, but horses keep me in the country too.

It's good that you feel balanced in these things, and in those shoes! ;)

  6. Great post, Michelle!!! Renaissance Woman, that's a good description, it fits you. Love the stilettos but I would fall off them and bust my arse, I'll stay with heels closer to the ground, but I'll bet they look great on you! :-)

  7. It is good to have different facets. The people who are like that are more interesting -- able to adapt more easily, enjoy a wide variety of things, can converse on different subjets. I believe it can be called "well rounded." I have known some people who are only grounded in one "pattern" for their life....they are not as much fun. This doesn't make you crazy or not sure of who you are; it makes you who you are.

  8. Thank you for sharing so much about you with us. I always say I am two different people. I have my work life side and my home life side. The home life side is truly the real me but I do like some facets of my work life. And it's funny the perceptions people have. I love that you are a little bit of city and country.

  9. Oh I know exactly what you mean. I love being a girl. It means we can be whatever we want. Ball cap and jeans, or heels and a little something sexy. It's what we do.

Kinda like a little bit country and a little bit rock n' roll. ;P only in the physical sense. and add a little modern rock in there as well. haha! Thank you for sharing, it truely is amazing what the equine world does to us, isn't it? There's something about having our ponie buddies around us that make us realize who we really are.

  12. You just sound well-rounded to me. I think there are many sides to most of us, complete with different tastes and preferences. I love a good mix!!

  13. PG, I don't think you are more eclectic than me, though. lol!

I love that you are a blend of many things...sort of like a rich and multi-flavored soup. All the spices melding together to make it rich and flavorful.

Embrace all that you are, my friend! :)

  15. I think this is where you and I are so different as sisters. I absolutely hate the city. I lived there for a time when I was in my early 20's and yuck. I am a country girl and always will be. Keep me away from traffic, noises, crowds etc. Don't get me wrong, I like to dress up and go out on the town, but my little town not the big city. I would be happy if I could stay home all the time! I have enough here to keep me busy!
When you move out to the country you can still go visit the city. Its not that far away. I have been telling you that for years! But that was when you weren't back into the horse thing and said you would NEVER move out of the city! Funny how things change...........

  16. Embrace the diversity, Pony Girl!!! It's all good!!

  17. And THIS is why I love you and your blog! Like me, you are a little bit of many differnt things! Who says we have to be justw one thing? Being multi faceted is the spice of life! There is os much in the world for us to experience!

    YOU go sista!

  18. It sounds to me like you are comfortable with all the various sides of yourself and that's what counts. It's what makes your blog so much fun to read.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I think the fact that you openly embrace all these different facets of who you are makes you more true to yourself. You aren't playing any games to try to make other people happy/like you. You are YOU. :)

  20. I really loved this entry, you will see when I show you my "site" that is exactly what our goal is!! Cowgirl; and what it means to us...For all of us it is different in little ways but yet we all share so much of the same likes!! WOW is all I can say!!

  21. Great post! I think because horses can humble us so easily, they bring out the REAL in all of us!

Sounds to me like you are livin' your dream!

  22. I think being able to live in both worlds is amazing and wonderul, and something I would LOVE to do! If I were born in a different place, with different parents, I would have made the perfect cowgirl.

  23. Lemonade and fried chicken... Love that description. I long for some reason to get all gussied up lately. Those opportunities just don't come around as often as they used to. But like you, if I had to make the choice, I'd choose the dirt and the boots. Good thing, because that's pretty much how we roll around here!

  24. That is kind of how I am. I love a bunch of different things!! I love to get all dressy but I love to wear my boots and jeans. I think it's wonderful to be so well rounded!! I grew up in a big suburb of Cleveland Ohio, and now I live in the middle of no where Louisiana. I love it. I love knowing where I came from and being where I am now. There is just something about the simple country life that just makes sense to me. Great post, and I love that country duo too!!

  25. I think we're all kind of like what you describe yourself as, city and country. It's fun to be both, maybe without different facets to our personalities we would be boring to ourselves and others.

    ReplyDelete
  26. So....it's a good thing that I re-infected you with the "horse bug"???

    ReplyDelete
  27. That's why we love you, Pony Girl - We never know which of your styles - city or country - we're going to find here - and I'll bet that most of us would have to admit that we're coming from a very similar place. It's the yin and the yang of boots and stilettos.

    ReplyDelete
  28. {Victoria}~ I think perhaps you just gave someone a great idea for a new blog name- "The Ying and Yang of Boots and Stilettos!" ;)

  29. I think most of us are a bit of everything... most country women love a little city slick now and again. And city chicks yearn for some simple bush livin' every now and then.

I quite liked being a city chick. Specially those restaurants. But I adore being a bush girl. And I love Robbie Williams and U2, alongside Keith Urban and Slim Dusty.

Much more interesting not to pigeonhole!!!
    :-)
