Wild At Heart

Fancy, 1 year old filly

Tracey at the Mustang Diaries wrote this post about the BLM's Internet Mustang Adoption program last week. Oh goodness, that was trouble! I spent over an hour on the BLM site browsing all of the available Mustangs for adoption.

Azul, 4 year old mare

I think Mustangs touch a little bit of all of our hearts and souls, in some way. Maybe you have no interest in ever owning one, whether adopted wild, or completely trained. Regardless, it's hard not to appreciate the pure wildness and the historical significance of the Mustang, isn't it? There is just something so....well, wild about them. As a youngster, I always had an appreciation for that wild spirit, yet a little desire to tame it, too.

Gallant, 3 yr. old gelding

I am not in a place in my life to adopt a Mustang right now. I don't have the time, finances, or the confidence to take on such a project. But I would love to, someday. It would be quite an experience. It would be a big decision to make. And a big commitment. Being that I love groundwork as much as riding, I think I would be patient enough to take the time gentling and working with a wild horse.

Sparky, 1 yr. old gelding.

I wouldn't even care if the Mustang was very big. I'm fine with a horse around 14.1 hands. After all, I'm only 5'3".

Stormy, 1 year old burro gelding

The Mustangs and burro pictured in this post are all available for adoption. They do not have these names, I gave them names for the sake of identifying them in this blog post. Bidding is going on right now, live online, only for another 7 days! In case you are tempted. And if you haven't visited Tracey's site, please do. She is passionate about these horses and both she and her daughter do such inspiring work with them.

Gallant again.

This one in particular called to me....his stout body, beautiful head, gorgeous color, "calm disposition." Three current bids.....the highest is at $190. If only...... wishes were horses. Sigh.

Stay a little wild, everyone!

  1. Ohhhh...what a beautiful group of mustangs...I am in love with the chocolate cream puff in the first picture! I can't believe I have *two* little mustangs now! Chloe is going to be a big challenge...I will learn so much!

You would be an amazing mustang mom...maybe when you meet your dream cowboy you'll both adopt a pair of beautiful mustangs :)

  2. I am not going to show my dad this post. LOL! He is already looking at an online site for more. It is probably the same site as the one you posted. The very first mustang looks a lot like the one he is looking to bid on.

They are all beautiful and amazing creatures.

  5. I have always thought that a Mustang trail horse would be the best. After all, they grew up out on the range, right???

Maybe one day, but for right now, I barely have the time to ride the horse that I have, let alone "tame" a wild one. :)

  6. Gallant is really gorgeous! I wouldn't be surprised if you adopted one some day in the future and I'm sure that horse would have found the perfect home!

  7. ohhh, i hope they find good and loving homes. what happens if they are not sold? that kind of thing saddens me. i love animals so much and they have no clue what is going to happen to them during these transition periods...

  8. Girl when you get the itch, come visit. You can spend ALL the time you want with Sugarfoot :)

They are beautiful and I stay off that online auction. It's so hard to not click and bid!!

  9. I did exactly the same thing after reading Mustang Diaries - couldn't stop looking at the horses avaiable through the online auction. I hope they all have happy endings and end up with folks who have the skills to do them right.

  10. They are so majestic. I would love to be able to photograph them in the wild. I think I would be more apt to bring the burro home though!

  11. Ah yes...adopting a horse! maybe I'll adopt one of these and turn it over to a cowgirls grace!!!LOL

  12. Wow - Gallant's the one who caught my eye too!! He's gorgeous!! I too, would love to adopt a mustang, and like you, I love groundwork. For some reason, I've never been accused of a person having an excess of patience...except where horses are concerned, then my patience seems without limit. I would gladly accept the challenge of gentling a mustang, but am limited by finances, time and if I'm honest there's just not enough of me for 5 horses, let alone 6. $190 is nothing...what a temptation.

  13. Well that just pulled on the ole' heart strings PG. You are right, so wildly beautiful. The BLM had a huge auction here last fall. Kind of strange but I guess they wanted to see how it went. I believe most of them sold.

  14. Man do I wish I had the time for "azul'... She's fantastic. looks alot like wife's new gelding. Hopefully in a year or so I can adopt one. I'd love to do it.

  15. Intriguing concept - have yet to hear of the equivalent down here (we have brumbies, not mustangs)...

  16. What!!!! You are only 5'3"!!?!?!? Sorry, beautiful post, I love mustangs, I want one too, they are so captivating, etc. etc. etc. but you are only 5'3"? Isnt this world of blogging funny, I always thought from your pictures that you were tall...like 5'8-10" LOL

  17. I love the mustangs. I think that they are really beautiful!

  18. {BB & AHCM}~ Darn, I ruined the allure of being of top model height, hee hee! ;) Yes, I'm a shrimp. In fact, I think I might have even shrunk to about 5'2 1/2".....However, I have long legs, so that keeps me from looking too short. I am just petite all around. My Boy is 15.2, if you look at pictures of me riding him, my legs barely graze the bottom of his belly.

  19. Gallant is my favorite. Someone emailed me saying they were wanting to bid on him. If she wins, I get to haul him home! Naturally, there's a free trip to Burns in it for me, lol...and another trip into the Steens to see the wild ones! Maybe we need to plan a bloggers road trip, eh?

    ReplyDelete
  20. {Tracey}~ Oh yea, I hope she gets him and you can see him and take some pics! A bloggers trip to see the wild ones....you are brilliant! I'm packing my bag now!! Seriously.

  21. I totally agree with you on the "mystique" that the Mustangs hold. Very cool post!

    ReplyDelete
  22. {Lorena}~ While working on this post, I was at a loss for all the words I wanted to use to describe Mustangs....and "mystique" is perfect- the one on the tip of my tongue! ;)

  23. Aw, thanks for the warm welcome back. I have missed everyone. I am happy to have gotten a moment to post! lol. Mustangs now that is a handful!

  24. Gallant is a good choice, Pony Girl. He's put together well. I hope he goes to someone where we can see the progress.

I was never a Mustang "fan" until I adopted my girl at an auction last year, and now I'm hooked. I love Mustangs!

  25. Since you are my sis, you know I have been talking for years, about adopting a mustang and gentling and training one.
Gallant was one of the ones I "eyeballed", and I know you why you named the bay with the big white blaze, Sparky, looks almost exactly like your QH Sparky as a young 'un!
If I wasn't losing my job and my circumstances were different, I would definately have to consider adopting. Looking at the BLM internet auction site really made me want to bid on one, or two! But I will have to hold off for now.

    ReplyDelete
  26. {Paint Girl}~ Yep, you are right, the bay with the blaze reminded me a lot of my Sparky, the last mare I owned before I got out of horses for 16 years! Someday, maybe we can gentle and train a Mustang together... ??

    ReplyDelete
  27. Yes, Pony Girl, dear sis, maybe someday we can adopt and train one together! But if we do that, we might as well adopt 3! One for me, one for you, and one for my OH!

  28. I agree mustangs carry a huge significance to our history!! They are beautiful creates and they are so alluring... They always have such a beauty about them..

  32. Hi there little Missy! You are always thinking...aren't those neat horses? Let me tell you my first horse was a wild mustang filly and she was not pretty as these are, but she was sweet. I love the new photo site and it is beautiful photography! You go girl!

  33. I too would love to adopt one or two. I have always wanted one and anytime I see one I am always impressed at how stout they are and those big old round hooves are great. I hope you are able to fulfill this dream someday. That would be one lucky horse.

  34. Love "Fancy" and "Gallant"! Looks like there are some very nice looking prospects at the aution. Hope they find good homes.

  35. And..."Gallant" has a Spanish look to him :)

  36. Great post, PG!
The mustangs are so beautiful..wild and free...taming them is like holding a wild bird in your hand feeling it's heart beating wildly.
Mustangs are also a token or sign of the American West. The wild, rugged, adventurous West!

We sometimes see wild horses here in New Mexico. It always makes my heart miss a beat. What a thrill!
