Cowboy Mixin'

I have to tell you a funny story. On Saturday, a friend invited me to a mixer/birthday party. I think I'm getting too old for mixer parties. A bunch of people, mostly single, who don't know each other, celebrating someone's birthday that they don't know. But, I cowgirled up, dragged another friend along, and kept a positive attitude knowing these things can sometimes be interesting and fun.

After we arrived and got a drink, the friend who invited me informs me she'd gotten a text from a guy that she had invited to the mixer since he was single, and he was stopping by. She also warned me this was the guy she went on one date with a month previously and didn't click with, but thought I might be interested in, and she wanted to set us up. She suggested this to me this via email, but I was a bad friend and forgot to reply. Luckily, she had never mentioned me or her idea to him, so he didn't know who I was.

The guy shows up and he is pretty short, maybe 5'5". Not a huge deal for me, as I'm 5'3". He is outgoing, a California Boy, has a job with a great company. Throughout the night, my other friend and I chatted him up a bit off and on. Neither of us clicked or were interested, but he was fun to talk to.

At some point California Boy told us he plays soccer a lot. And I told him that I use to play too, maybe seven years ago. He asked why I didn't play anymore and I told him I didn't really know, but that I have a horse now and that takes up my time and money. He said oh- my dad was a jockey! That was intriguing. We talked a little about the Preakness. His dad doesn't ride anymore, but still works at Santa Anita.

Anyway, to make a long story short (I can't tell short stories- not in my genetic makeup) he then tells us that the irony of his dad being a jockey is that he is very, very, allergic to horses. Like swells up something awful if he gets near them or someone that has been. He said when he was little, his dad would get in the car and if he hadn't washed up from riding, it would really affect him. Wow.

As we left the party and said goodbye to my friend, she asked what I thought of California Boy. I laughed and said he was a nice guy, but allergic to horses. She got a chuckle out of that one, trying to set up her only cowgirl friend with a guy allergic to horses! Of course, that hadn't come up in their one-date conversation.

A guy who has no interest in horses is one thing, but a guy that physically can't be around them is another. At least with the first option, I have a chance of converting them, as so many of you out there have done.

Besides, I have a feeling that Tracey from The Mustang Diaries might someday set me up with a Mustang horse whisperer. I just know it.......

  4. What a sad fate for California Guy. When I was single it never worked when friends tried to set me up with someone they decided to pass on. Keep mixin' cuz ya never know when the right cowboy will mosey across your path.

  5. Don't be so quick! Our trainer fell in love with a guy allergic to horses. He comes to watch outdoor events and she does all her "horse laundry" at her mom's.

They are very happy together. :)

Thanks for stopping by my blog.

  10. Oh no! PG! Don't do it. Don't date someone with no interest in horses! It's BAD! Very BAD!
Sounds like you had a great night even though cali boy didn't work out.

  11. {Dusty Devoe}~ Mom, you are too funny! Of course I will tell you when I find Mr. Cowboy, before I post it on my blog. I promise! xo

  12. When you first told me this story, I had to laugh, and now it is even funnier!
Can't do the allergic to horses thing, at least I was able to convert my man to riding horses! But I still would have been ok if he didn't ever want to ride!
We will get you that cowboy! Don't know when, but it will happen!

  13. That is TOO funny! Of all things that could possibly be a turn off, he has to go and be allergic to horses! Bummer for him! ;) That's gotta be number one on the top ten list of deal breakers!

  14. ROFL... Okay, now I have something to live for...

  15. Oh, and I might add that City Boy is also a California Boy... But he's not allergic, or the deal would definitely been off!

  16. {Tracey}~ I'm countin' on ya! You can send their pics and profiles to me via email. Hee hee!! j/k ;)

  17. Lol! Good thing for Paint Girl then that you guys didn't click, or she would be ending up with all your horse laundry! :-D

  18. LOL that's great!! Well I guess we'll just wait and see about this "mustang whisperer" :)

  19. PG - that is too funny! If you ever do meet a "perfect" guy who happens to be allergic, let me know. Our daughter, Maizie, was exposed to horses as a baby and then re-exposed as an 8 year old. She developed a terrible allergy (face/eyes swelled, coughing, etc) even from my horsey clothes. We got her over it by slowly exposing her and now she is good to go! Sorry so long - I can't tell short stories either!

  20. Hee Hee. At least you got that out into the open right away before falling for him.
I hope you find your "Buck Brannaman" cowboy love someday!

  21. Man... you SOOOOO need to get yerself to Ree's ranch for a Ranchelor quest. Or hop on a plane to Sydney for the next The Farmer Wants a Wife TV show!!!!!

  22. LMAO! That is NO match whatsoever! LOL, what a story, I can just imagine your eyes buggin' out when he said he was extremely allergic! LOL~

  23. {Juliette}~ I'm glad your daughter was able to get over her allergy. Paint Girl told me that she has heard of adults that developed an allergy to horses later in life. Wow!
Thanks for the helpful input over at the photog blog, too!

  24. I could just see it now...Pony Girl comes home after a nice day with her Boy, hugs her hubby, and he immediately breaks out in hives...lol!!! (Well not really...poor guy!)

I got kind of lucky as my hubby has always worked and been around panonies. When we were first dating, he mentioned that he worked on a cutting horse/cattle ranch in Moses Lake during college, and I batted my eyelashes at him and scooted in a bit closer...teeheehee!!!!

  25. Allergic definitely wouln't work. My husband used to be deathly afraid of horses but now he isn't. He just needed to be around them to be comfortable. He won't ever ride though. He has a bad back and is afraid to ride. I am so pleased that he likes being around them now though. He thought I was crazy to want horses and boxer dogs but now he loves them both!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Oh yeah. Being allergic to horses is an instant disqualification. My father-in-law gets hay fever every time he comes to visit, and gripes about the hay. I don't know what he's thinking. It's not like we're going to ship off all our hay and board our horses elsewhere just so that he can visit three or four times a year without sneezing.

  27. Ah well, some things weren't meant to be! My youngest son has tested as being allergic to horses, and he is the one who enjoys riding the most!

  28. Welcome to my world. WHEN I have a horse to see every day I would have to come home, strip down in the garage and sneak in the house, directly in to the shower and wash my hair. I then would wash my "barn" clothes at the laundry matt. So... While if you did have an amazing spark I would say go for it! I wouldnt go fishing for a guy who is allergic either! lol

    ReplyDelete
  29. lmao oh of she had only known! Thats really too bad! your guy is out there somewhere. Just waiting to ride off into the sunset with you! ;P

  30. I have never heard of anyone being allergic to horses!! What a horrible fate that would be! That was a great story -- how bizarre that the son of a jockey is allergic......
My sister-in-law was allergic to cats, but they really wanted one. She slowly introduced the cat into her house little by little and actually built up a tolerance. Now they have 3 cats!

  31. Yea, I'm thinking horse allergy boy doesn't cut it. But Mr. Right is out there, somewhere!

    ReplyDelete
  32. That is a very funny irony, PG!
But at least you found out from the very start. lol!

I dated a guy for a few months before inviting him over to my apartment, where I kept my kitty.

Come to find out he was terribly allergic...and told me if we were going to keep dating, I'd have to get ride of my cat.

    Hasta la Vista Boyfriend! lol!!

My friend/neighbor/riding buddy is allergic to horses, but she just deals with it. With 3 horses and a passion for them, there's nothing else she can do. lol!

  33. Oh Pony Girl, yes there's someone just waiting to find you! My friend's husband has no interest in horses and it's so much harder that way....it would be nice to have a guy that has the same interest in them as you do. I'm seeing many people who are allergic to horses these days and amazed that I never heard of it before I had horses! LOL! I cannot say discount every guy you meet though, because my hubby had never ridden and loves it! He was a college football player and his knees are shot so he can ride instead of maybe doing other sport related things! There are many converts too! I got tickled at your mom's comment too! Mr. Right is out there your trails have just not crossed yet! Luanne

  34. OH girl, that is too funny!! The poor guy!! LOL!!

But speaking of super HOT cowboys that ride and rope and are super good looking!! You have to see Holly's (Simply Undecided)brother!! Holy Hotness!! Girl, I told her she should hook you two up. I have no idea if her brother is single but you have to go see him in her pictures from their calf branding!!

Did I mention he was cute? Okay, anyway, the mixer sounded like fun. And I got a good chuckle about the California boy being allergic to horses.

  35. A definite "No" on that one. Because of my experience, I'm not even sure about the conversion of the non-horse guy, but it sounds you know some success stories so I'll try and keep an open mind.

    ReplyDelete
  36. All you can do is keep scanning the horizon...funny story! I one time dated a guy who told me he could ride...and of course, about an hour into our three-hour ride, he admitted he couldn't! I had figured that out of course, so we took an extra-long one just to punish him for not being truthful. He did keep riding after that, though.

  37. I have to add, hold out, hold out PG! I met my husband and the first thing he told me (after showing me a poloroid of his two Aussie Sheps he had along on his trip) was he hoped someday to get back to horses and get a mare so he could raise a baby horse....it's a dream I could back 100 percent. Hopefully next year, when he retires and we leave AK, we can get started on it. He gave me a lovely saddle for Christmas one year, too. So remember, a horse man will understand so much more about you that a non-horse one, who might just be incredibly tolerant. I'll take the former.....thank God!

    ReplyDelete
  38. {Julie}~ I have to agree with you....a horsey man would be ideal. Especially since most of my future goals include horses in some way or form. It just makes the most sense! When/why are you leaving AK? Thanks for stopping by to say hello, it's been a while! ;)
