Mangled Mess

My jewelry is in need of some serious help. I show you this picture first to calm your mind from the mess you are about to see.

Here is an overhead view of the chaos.

I got the wood carved leaf tray at an antique store. It's currently dusted in a coating of mineral powder foundation and needs a cleaning. Of course, that would require me to remove and reorganize the mess. The tray is perfect to hold trinkets on my bathroom counter. It's just kind of big, meaning lots of space to put things....and it doesn't help that the trinkets in my ownership have multiplied.

I don't wear a lot of jewelry to work. Usually just earrings and maybe a necklace. Weekends and special occasions, I wear more. I go through phases, though. For example, I was into big earrings for a while. And big bangle bracelets.

Most of my jewelry now takes on a western theme. Much of it is cheap, trendy costume jewelry from stores like Target. The rest are gifts from friends, family, or children I've taught over the years. But nothing fancy. No real pearls (what a shame.) No fancy diamonds. That is okay with me, I'm more funky than sophisticated. More rustic than elegant.

This venetian glass pendant?

It came in this little blue bag. A gift from a friend who recently traveled to Italy.

It didn't come with a chain, so I strung it on my favorite leather latigo string, which I got last summer at the feed store. Voila~ rustic elegance.

The chaos has overflown the wooden tray and spread to this wooden box. Or is that vice-versa?

Now, if you think it looks like I have a lot of jewelry, I don't even want to talk about my collection of these.

I feel utterly lost if I don't have at least 5 elastic hairbands in my line of sight at all times. I swear the black ones get up in the middle of the night and run away. I rarely have a black one on hand. I really should have called myself Pony Tail Girl.

Happy Friday everyone!

  1. Wow, can I just say that I have a tray on my dresser that looks identical...full of earrings, necklaces, bracelets, etc. So don't feel bad. But I am jealous of some of your stuff!

  2. You do have some great jewelry! My mom had this same problem, except her huge collection of earrings were spread through out the house in little dishes that were overflowing and she could never find the earrings she wanted to wear. A few years ago for Christmas I got her an earring rack and now that she's gotten in the habit of using it, it's GREAT! I just went to amazon.com and searched for earring rack. There are a bunch that pop up. I got her the harp shaped one and it's really cute with all of her earrings on it! I think there is a matching necklace holder also. :)

Great pictures too! I may have to spend hours this weekend taking pictures of my very small collection of jewelry now! hehe

  3. I need some of your jewelry savvy to wear off on me! I love jewelry but never really think about buying it so I pretty much wear the same necklace and earrings every day! They're cute & at least I'm accessorized, but I need to branch out a little! I need a personal jewelry shopper! ;) Then, I need to remember to put it all on in the morning as I'm running out the door! I love your collection!

  5. sound familiar! and the pony tail holders...the cats bat mine under the furniture and i can never find the good ones that aren't stretched out beyond use!

  6. It doesn't look that messy to me Pony Girl. I see some neat stuff there, some I recognize. I know what you mean about the pony tail holders. I tend to wear the ugly old scrunchies because they don't pull my hair, around the house anyway. The P Princess loses hair bands like there is no tomorrow. She takes them out wherever she feels like it. I find them EVERYWHERE!!! It drives me NUTS!

  7. LOL- I love some of your stuff but wish I had more myself... I loose things so only have a few of each...oh and a set of bangles (which I havent grown out of yet).

Funny about the elastic bands! The bracelet I never leave the house without is the dark brown (to match my hair) elastic around my wrist. I think people have come to think it is a religious thing (like a kabbalah red sting) LOL. Hell is a place where there are no elastics!

  8. Of course I'm a glass fanatic....love the venetian piece! Is that a Murano glass? Like the cord too! I have lots of jewelry I don't wear and need to get rid of! LOL!

  9. {Patches}~ I recently saw some really fun jewelry trees in a store at the mall, thanks for reminding me, what a great idea! I definitely need to invest in one (or two!)

{ACHM}~ I wear those elastics as bracelets too, LOL! Even when I wear my hair down, it usually goes up in a ponytail in about an hour! ;)

  10. I need to organize my jewelry someday too, I actually need to wear more jewelry! I have quite a bit but don't wear alot.
The elastic pony tail holders you are always missing, you leave them at my house all the time, that is probably where they are all disappearing too! I also can not live without these!!

  11. It looks like all the rest of us and our jewelry boxes, drawers, trays and everywhere else around the house! Hehe!!!

  12. We've got the same taste. I had to laugh at the black hair bands getting up and running away... yours too? Must be a thing, cause mine are NEVER there when I want one, and I buy them all the time.
    Love that glass pendant. Gorgeous!

  13. I have my necklaces hanging on hooks in my closet and earrings are in a jumbled mess in a jewelry box. When I'm running late in the morning, I'll sometimes end up just dumping them all on the counter so I can spread them out and find what I'm looking for.

  14. I would think with your blonde hair that the light elastics would be the ones running away. lol

  15. Wow! Look at all that cool jewelry! That venetian glass pendant is my fave. I keep my jewelry in little cooking dishes on the back of the toilet! Now that is pathetic! A nice tray of stuff in the bedroom would be much sexier.

  16. I hopped over from your Pink Saturdy post/blog. I wanted to see what Pony Girl is all about!

Of course, I'm smitten and had to sign up as a follower b/c my little one is going to be head over heels in love with your blog!

Over Mother's Day weekend we took the little ones to the Deanna Rose Farmstead here in Overland Park, KS (suburb of Kansas City). Mary got to do a pony ride and was in heaven. But what she was most proud of was her ability to identify an Appalossa that was in the stable. She sounded so sweet asking the stablehands in her 4-year old voice if that "pony" was an Appaloosa!

I'm sure we will be back for many visits,
    Valerie

  17. Your camera makes everything look good. Your mess looks like ART! This topic of jewelry makes me sad because during my travels last weekend, I lost my favorite beaded bracelet I got from the Foxy Horse and Hound store. It had three strands-dark blue beads--that met in the middle. I wore it ALL the time with my leather and bling snap on bracelet a lady around here makes. But the beaded bracelet--gone, gone, gone!!! Whhhaaaaaaa!!!!

  18. {Valerie}~ Welcome! I'm so glad your little one likes Appaloosas! ;)

{Linda}~ Oh no, so sorry to hear you lost your favorite bracelet! I "misplace" jewelry all of the time, but usually it turns back up again!

  19. Cool jewelry, don't fancy untagling it, though! I leave on all that I wear and it only comes off for the occasional cleaning, 9 rings on various fingers, some doubled up, 1 diamond neclace, I wear my bracelets that Steve gets me until they literally wear down and fall off, and 5 earring, 5 holes. Good luck!

  20. I have this really small unicorn that has a tray and I put my small loop earrings on the unicorn horn and then put the other things on the tray. I don't have very much jewelry at all. Maybe I need some more??

And my pony tail holders do the same thing!! I found a bunch of them today around my night stand. Those sneaky little devils.

  21. You 'n' me both PG... in the hair elastic department anyway!!! My brown ones just vanish... along with all the socks that go missing in the wash, I suspect.

Love, love your glass necklace. Been to Venice too - totally one of my favourite places in the world.

  22. I was just saying to myself that I had to do SOMETHING about my jewelry mess on my dresser. But I blew coffee through my nose when you made the hair elastic comment, too funny. I'm the same way, they are everywhere including the cat's stomach.

  23. You should see the small drawer I keep my jewelry in -- what a fright! My sister-in-law has the greatest collection of jewelry. Of course, she keeps hers very well organized.....I think the "mangled mess" you and I have are much more common than the organization of my sister-in-law....

  24. This looks much like my dresser, except you really do have some great stuff. I have mineral powder make up residue on most stuff, but it does wonders for the skin.

  25. Pony Tail girl...lol! You are a funny gal. :)

You have some pretty jewelry. I only have a small fraction of that. I rarely even wear earrings. lol
