Cowtown

I am visiting my parents this weekend. Tomorrow we are getting up at 4:30 a.m. (Starbucks, Starbucks, somebody help me) and will be on the road to make a 4 hour drive to see a Pat and Linda Parelli clinic. My mom is a big Parelli fan and uses many of his natural horsemanship techniques. I am excited to see this clinic. I will be prowling for cowboys. No, really, I have a feeling Parelli will be very entertaining. I will share photos and insight when I return. This evening after I got here, we went to the barn to see my mom's gelding, Dusty. He is adjusting well to his new stable. It was a lovely evening and so peaceful here in the countryside, which is surrounded by small cattle farms. My dad and I took their dog Rosie on a walk to visit the cows pastured across from the stable. I do not think Rosie has ever seen cows up close. She barked at them. My dad mooed at them. They started walking towards the fence. I told him to stop because the farmer on the tractor might yell at us. He was probably already wondering why I was taking pictures of his cows. Many of the cows had calves frolicking at their sides.

One cow came right over to the fence. I called her Big Mama. I think she is going to give birth tonight. Look at the size of this poor gal's belly! I bet when we return to the stable on Sunday afternoon, she will have a calf at her udder.

She came up really close. Like she was a horse, I picked her some dandelions and threw them over the fence. She was not amused.

Her friend ambled over and joined her. They were intently focused on Rosie.

Perhaps they were just interested in her especially fashionable bandana.

One thing is for sure, if this Pony Girl wants to be a real cowgirl, she has a lot more to learn about cows. Or cattle. No bull.

  1. How fun, enjoy the drive. I think you might just see a cowboy or two where you are going, and they have some amazing "tack stores" aorund those parts. Heck you may see a few of this DQ's cousins around.

  2. Oh I'm really envious. Nothing like a Parelli clinic to give you a confidence boost. I'll be anxious to hear what you take away from this.

  6. My guess is they wanted to chase the dog. Cows like to do that. =)

I hope you had a great weekend, by now you are either home or heading home. Hope the clinic was fun, give us details when you recover.

  10. Yes, I love the open country. I think it depends on where and how you were raised, maybe (the grass is always greener.....) There are a lot of forests here. But I really like the open space, even if others might consider it desolate. I like looking at the land and the sky, expanding on seemingly forever, and not being in a canopy of trees!!
