What's Your Pick?

Which of these pictures of My Boy do you like best? The one in color, or the one in black and white? You can click on the pictures to see them in better detail.

For some reason, I really like this picture. It's really unusual for me to take such a candid picture of my horse. Typically, he's looking right at me over the gate. Or, he's going around the arena on the longe line. Or, we're posing while someone else is taking the picture. Or, he's eating grass.

But this one really captures him in a moment that I see frequently, but never snap a picture of. He was leaving his "hangout spot" near the tree and walking down to the gate. He reached the muddiest spot in the pasture and stopped. You can tell he is very contemplative here. He lowered his head a bit, seemed to take a breath, looked once to his right, and then came to a decision. He continued walking down to the gate.

I'll never really know why he paused. I can only imagine exactly what he was thinking. He didn't like the mud? He didn't want to be caught? He heard something in the woods? But I like the lowered position of his head, the ears going two different directions, the breeze blowing lightly on his mane and forelock. I just don't know if I like it better in color, or in black and white!

I hope you all had a great weekend!

  1. I like the one with color. I think he is such a pretty horse. All the green in the background is a nice framing for him and I see the expression in his face with the color:-) Nice shot!

  2. Color for sure. The B&W looks grainy... Maybe try to re-edit the color shot, focus the auto-re-focus on the grass, or his face..

  3. Great bokeh. Looks like you're getting the aperture thing figured out. I like the b/w.

  4. Color! I love that look. My horse gets it all the time when he's going to come to me and be a good boy, but would really have rather stayed back with his buds.

  5. I like the colors of the color one! I like the way the light is hitting his face and mane.

  6. I love black and white photos but I like the color one better. Maybe because he is so beautiful that I can't get enough pics of him!

  7. Color. To me, My Boy stands out more in color and I like how the green grass pops.

  8. Colour! Not just because I'm starved for the colour green, but because you can see the warm expression in his eyes better!

  9. They both look nice, because they both capture something different, but my vote is for the color one. I love his look..."Should I make a run for it, or should I be a good boy and come??"

  10. I'm having trouble deciding - I like them both - but on balance I'll go for the color - in the B&W he sort of blends in with the background. I love watching the horses doing things (or just "being") and wondering what their thoughts are.

  11. I like the color one too! I love blk and wht pictures, but i think the colored one really captures him and his beauty!

  12. They are both very nice , the B&W is interesting , but I think his coppery red is absolutley gorgeous and too pretty to miss!

  13. Although I like them both and think they evoke different feelings, I am going with the color picture as my favorite.

  14. I think the color is my favorite. I love your horse's coloring up against the bright green grass.

  15. I like the colored one for what it's worth! I would also crop it closer with just a hint of the background green left.....then I would play with the soft focus and frame his head with the blurry edges (just a tad, not a bunch), maybe add a little bit of glow if it doesn't wash him out too much.... he's so cute! I don't usually do a lot of doctoring photos but it's fun to mess around to see different effects. I undo everything in the end. Personally I can always tell when people have saturated too much and I don't like it. Looks like you're having fun with your new camera! Great job with this shot! He's so cute! Luanne

  16. Both are great! You might want to add more contrast to the B/W to pull out the darks. It will make it pop. Love your blog!

  17. I really like them both! I think that pic would look awesome in a sepia tone though. Maybe do a little "PW-ing", as I like to call it. Using Pioneer Woman's Photoshop actions, like the darkened border. I think you can do it thru Piknik also, if you don't have PS. That's my two cents!

  18. The B&W intrigues me for some reason.

  19. It depends on what you want it for. Sometimes the B/W work best and then the colored at other times. Either way they are both great pictures!

  20. Color! I think you would need some more contrast on the black and white - as it is now, it's too subtle, and Your Boy has a colorful personality.

  21. I love them both. I'm going back and forth...first I liked the color one better, but the B&W is nice, too. Hmmmm... sorry, not much help here!

  22. I too, prefer the color. The expression in his eyes shows up more.

  23. First ... I like both of the photos of this beautiful boy. Then I clicked to make them larger and went back and forth.

The color photo shows off his beautiful markings, decided that was my favorite.

Then I studied the B/W, with the interesting shadows. He seems so up close and personal, thought for sure that was a favorite.

Then it was back to the color photo. So, here is my final decision ... I love both! Sure hope that helps!

  24. I like the color, it shows off those Appy spots!

  25. I love the color one. I also like B & W pictures but this particular picture I like better in color!

  26. The color one is my favorite, but the black one is pretty too. Are you having fun with your new camera?

  27. Well, I'm not much help, because I can't decide either. Maybe the second one? I like the slightly warm tone of the black and white.

  28. I love the color one, even though both are stunning. What a great shot, I love the color combination of the new spring grass and his warm coat color.

  29. I prefer the colour pic. I love b&w photos but to me the colour just works better in this case.

Oh, and he was probably thinking "Just how hard do I want to work my Pony Girl today?" while contemplating rolling in that mud before you groom him! lol

  30. I am with the other person who commented and said to adjust the contrast in the BandW picture to make it pop more. And too, if you put a little blending around the left side of the picture it will darken it a bit and then make Your Boy really stand out. I like them both, and I am leaning more towards the black and white one. With a bit more contrast.

  31. {Andrea}~ What's "blending"? Hee! ;) I really don't know much about editing at this point. No Photoshop here. I can do basic color and saturation. But I played around with it a little more, and will add it to tomorrow's post!

  32. OH...Um...I may be the only one save two tohers for a B/W adjsuted to make it POP!
    Great candid Pony Girl!

  33. I like them both!!! But I am leaning towards the color just because of the obvious focus on your boy and the back ground being just that.. a back ground!!

  34. I looove the color one b/c of the green grass starting to come up...it really complements MB's beautiful colors!

That's one of my fave pics of your spotted boy...he looks so sweet and thoughtful and curious.

    Love that boy :)
