Window Shopping

Do you ever think about or plan out the next horse you'd like to own? I sometimes enjoy "window shopping" for a new horse. My sister Paint Girl does this too, she is always sending me links to horses on Craigslist.org or Dreamhorse.com. I think it is always interesting to see what is out there. Check the market, browse the quality of horses for sale and their prices. Just reading the ad narratives are entertaining, which often contain very unique depictions of each horse.

Don't get the wrong idea, of course, all this window shopping has nothing to do with My Boy's anti-catching antics lately! It is just fun to look! And sometimes, that looking really makes you appreciate what you already have, don't you think?!

Will my next horse be a few spot leopard Appaloosa?

Or a lovely liver chestnut Morgan?

Or a bulky blue roan Quarter Horse?

Just for fun, what would your next horse be, if you could search for a very specific breed? Or, are you more of a cosmic horse purchaser, leaving it to fate and taking whoever might come your way as it is meant to be?

  1. I always look at the Arabs and Paints. Since I have one of each and they are my favorites that is what I stick too. Although I do look at QH's, TWH, Morgans, Apps and from time to time I throw in a TB.
Who knows what our next "dream" horse may be!

  2. If I were to pick out the "perfect" horse (for me) it would be either paint, appy or quarter horse. Big, solid build. Speedy but calm. And pretty. (or handsome?)

  3. I agree with Paint Girl that you never know what your next dream horse might be. Animals have a way of finding their own way to Casa Fry. I can sit here and say that my next would be another Appy, but then there's Quaker, one of Heather's rescues, who is a little palomino QH. More about him once I run it by Heather. I won't post about her horses without her permission.

  4. In a perfect world, my next horse will be a 6 to 8 year old, bulky as all get out, 15 or so hands, Quarter horse. He or she (with a preference toward the he) will have been on a big ranch since he was born and will have many, miles on him. He'll be like one of those that sells at the Working Cow Horse sales for 20K, only I'll buy him for, let's be generous and say 2k.

    It is my prayer.

But not yet, because I still have JJ and he's practically perfect, just getting kind of old...

    Amen.

  5. Cindydianne, my next horse will be your next horse's shorter brother.

  6. I love window shopping on Craigslist and Dreamhorse...

I would LOVE for my next horse to be either a Tovero or a bay appaloosa with a blanket. Mare or gelding doesn't matter...

But then, I did fall in love with a gray Thoroughbred I saw on the TBFriends website... I wouldn't mind owning him either!

  7. I love paints :0) I left something for you over at my blog!

  8. I just found my dream horse...so I'm not really shopping at the moment. BUT, if I was looking and had an endless checking account, it would be a huge Irish Sporthorse that could jump the moon, dappled gray or very dark bay. Or a Friesian. Oooh...big and black with a mane to die for!

  9. Horse window shopping? You bet. Out the car window, online.... I'm not hunting for real, but it's sure fun to daydream.

If I really had to pick, I might go for a Welsh next time. Cute little devils, and I grew up with a Welsh-Morgan cross that was wonderful. But I'm pretty easy - as long as it's safe, sound, sane, healthy and equine it would probably make me happy. (Well, better add affordable, too! LOL)

  10. How fun! I believe "window shopping" or "day dreaming" about things we want is the beginning of getting it;) Plus it's fun! I love the little guy in the first pic!

  11. Well since I don't own a horse and I probably never will will (brain surgery, my neurosurgeon would have a hissy if I got up that high on a moving animal) I can't say that I window shop for a horse. I do, however, window shop for dogs. Always have. Kind of a habit actually since I am an active member of French Bulldog Rescue and one of the few on their Review Crew and must go through all of the applicants with a fine tooth comb and, consequently, the bios of all the dogs too. My absolute favs are the seniors who have lost their front teeth and have a tongue that permanently hangs out the front of their mouths. I LOVE that look. But yeah, I am always on the look out for those old dogs, any breed I have the thing for those old coots. Love them to death. I would buy a bazillion acre farm just to retire a bunch of old animals on. Hell if I had that much land I'd probably include old horses too. Good thing for my hubby we're poor huh?

  12. My untimate horse that I want is a Sweedish Warmblood. If money were no issue I would import one today. I love their athleticism, their heads and they way they are put together and we would definately turn some heads in the show ring. However I don't see that ever happening for the fact that I have too big a heart for rescues. I have never sought out any of my animals, they have found me in one way or another. I suspect that if I get another equine friend it will be the same. But I agree with you, it's always fun to dream. I wan't looking for an appy or a horse in general at all when I stumbled upon Possum, noe we're the best of friends.

  13. Oh and I would prefer a horse the height of 16.2-17.2

  14. you should visit my blog, fantastykvoyage.blogspot.com . I just wrote about my dream horse! I want a Friesian gelding!!!

  15. I window shop every day. I know .exactly. what my next horse will be, but don't know when or if I'll ever get another. My criteria is exacting...as it was when I found The Littlest Redhead. 1. must be a mare. 2)must have market-able bloodlines 3)must be between 14.0 and 15.0 hands, need a short horse. 4) must be between X and Y in price. 5) must be either AQHA or APHA, don't mind the solid breds either since I don't ride the color! 6) must be no more than very green broke and prefer led'n'fed. I don't want to deal with others hidden mistakes, I'd rather put the buttons there myself. 7) can be anywhere between yearling and 3 in age.

I've found several that I'd snatch up in a heartbeat if I had my own place, but since I don't...those great deals have gone to someone else.

  16. I don't know, it would be more on how cowy and would need to be a ranch working horse. I love sorrells! There is a red roan horse that if it went up for sale, I would buy in a heartbeat! A good friend of ours owns it and he is a working son of a gun, built like a brick house, and handsome to boot!

Of course I'm already spoiled as I'm mounted real well! I love my girl and the boys we have!

  17. Dream horse- is that like a dream date?
Be careful Pony -Girl! Window shopping can lead to involuntary purchase -it could happen!
" Oh dear! I just woke up from a dream and standing in my pasture was this georgous horse! How did he get there? He looks vagely familiar... Oh well, guess I'll keep him!" (heehee)

I'd pick a solid own son of Rugged Lark- money would be no object- neither would age!
I've owned a lot of horses- and I find they 'come' to me when I need them. Some horses I've loved and some I've hated, but they all have taught me something that I needed to learn at the time. Fate or divine interference? Some of the best horses I've had were mutts- some of the worst were well bred...I like to think that it is my attitude that makes them perfect...at least for me.

  18. Oh we are doing that right now. We need to sell my daughter's large pony first. It is so fun to look though!

  19. Oh boy, what fun!! I love dreaming about horses!! I think great horses come in all breeds, all genders, all sizes, and definitely all colors, I admire and love them all, but...since we're dreaming here, let's see... big, soft, dreamy eyes, intelligence and bravery to boot; but most importantly, tons of heart (you know, that "I can do that - no problem attitude", and I would'nt mind if he/she came in a big ole gorgeous bay or black Friesian body full of attitude...and spots...must have spots!! Hee hee
Do they make friesians with spots?? hmmm

  20. I have thought about this tons...My sister would like me to breed(don"t turn me into FH!!) the Thoroughbred mare to anotherof the like...I do love them but...I love Arabians and am smitten too with Frisians. I know they are cart horses..but I have met some pretty neat Thoroughbred crosses. So maybe one of those crosses or an Anglo. Dreamin' here!
    Thanks for asking dear!

  21. A dead broke gaited palamino for me. I think they are just beautiful. I love the Morgan breed, they are very healthy and have good hooves but my back wants a gaited horse!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Mine would be a dead-broke, sane, sound, trail riding Appy.

  23. I no longer look at color or breed, I look at need and what I can do with it. Age, experience and temperament. Color comes last, I do browse mares however. I still kick myself for not buying Reg. quarter horse mare which needed me at an auction. She was double Impressive bred. Neg/neg but a lot of people stay away from Impressive, She was a pityful sorral and sold for $200 and I still kick myself for not saving her. She would have been great and I could have fixed her up in no time.

  24. Hmm - that's a tough one! I had really specific guidelines in mind for my last purchase - but ended up going far off track... The last thing I wanted was an appy, because I had one as a kid and wanted a different breed to try. Guess what I ended up with? An appy!

In the future, I would like a large pony. I'm really short, so something around 14.1-14.3hh would be just great. A nice little sport pony - maybe a connemara cross or a warmblood cross.

It sure is fun to see what is out there!

  25. I'm more of a 'cosmic horse purchaser' I think.
That's how my current horse fell into my barn :)

In the past I had my heart set on a buckskin colored horse, though, so that's probably what I'd look for if out horse shopping.

  26. Oh and I forgot to add: a buckskin with miles and miles of trail experience, sound and calm, a great partner to explore the trails. A been there, done that kind of horse.

I am actually keeping my eyes open for a pony for my kids, though.
Color is not even a thought. Babysitter-type, kind, calm and sweet would be the criteria.

PG! You haven't mentioned what kind of horse you'd window shop for?

    ~Lisa

  27. As usual, I second Miss Lisa's comment about being more of a cosmic kind of gal. Horses have always just sort of found me, whether I am actively looking for one or not.

Even if money was no option, I honestly have no clue as to what breed I would own. It really wouldn't matter as long as it suited my needs, and fit in to my lifestyle. :)

  28. I like the arab crosses...right now nothing has struck my fancy..I am know it when I see sort of person..hey thats how I got Booster and thats worked out pretty good.

  29. We just bought our horse and pony last week. The pony is an adorable appy and the horse is my boy, a giant (16.3) warmblood cross, bay.

Neither is what I set out to find looks wise. I've always been partials to grays as I grew up riding the sweetest gray TB/arab cross. She was perfect, and her name was Tigger. She was not mine, she was our neighbors, and they were kind enough to let me use her for pony club and ride her every single day!!

Our new boys have finally settled in nicely, and while I had thought I needed to send both of them back for different reasons, that has changed. I can tell they are happy here, and suddenly the snotty attitude in the pony has completely disappeared. He is fed on time and given daily attention and his pinned ears and threatening actions have completely gone away. It's amazing!

The big boy has manners like I can't believe, and I learn more about him each day and realize I just like him even more and more.

So that's my long story of sometimes you end up with different than what you are looking for, because it fits the criteria of your most important items on your wish list. And with love and gentleness and affection, some horses with so/so people skills suddenly become the dream horse that you were looking for. Like our pony, who I can't believe is even the same snotty boy that arrived here last week. The difference in attitude is that drastic.

So I guess I'm a cosmic believer more than anything. I think you get who/what you are supposed to get. I prayed about the horses we would find for my kids and myself, and I think the Lord matched me to two absolutely perfect boys. So I'll do the same thing again next time. :o)

Sorry for the long post... fun topic! :o)

  30. Hee Lisa, you're right! I did not mention what I'd be looking for. I really do not know where I'll be in my life by the time I'm ready for a second horse (or a replacement for My Boy when the time should come....) but I am thinking I will just see what I'm up for. I didn't really "horse shop" for My Boy, since I randomly leased him from my sister's trainer before he came up for sale, so I really want to "shop" around this time, trying out different horses, ages, and breeds. I do know that I want a broke horse, unless I have property of my own where I can ride more frequently. I do not want a younger horse that will require a lot of training. But never say never, it just depends. Maybe I'll have married my cowboy by then and I can stay home and train my horse! ;) And of course, because My Boy is reading this, I have to say this, I would like to look mostly at Appaloosas!

    ReplyDelete
  31. I usually browse the sale sites once a month, then get depressed when I can't have all the great horses I see. Right now, we've got enough to take care of, so unless the perfect horse is standing in one of the paddocks some morning with a bow on his neck, I don't think I will be buying anything anytime soon.

  32. Oh I am always horse shopping. I am always wanting something new. Maybe that is why we have 16 horses here at my house. Right now I am on the hunt for a kid's horse. Those are hard to find.

I love quarter horses. I love the big old ranch type geldings. Or I could have one of those really nice western pleasure show horses. I would really love one of those. I had a dream the other night that my husband was going to buy me a 50,000 dollar WP horse!! It was a great dream.

  33. I love the little spotted one! WoW that is a chestnut! I like Paliminos! I want a Clydesdale!!

    ReplyDelete
  34. I love paints. Hubby would love to have a buckskin.
But sometimes we don't get a choice and the horse picks us *smiles*

    ReplyDelete
  35. I would want a very easy going gaited horse TWH, MFT, or morgan. with a ton of trail experience. I would not want it to be taller than 15 hands and between 8-15 years old. Mare or gelding makes no difference. I would want it to be a dilute color, buckskin, palomino, perlino, champagne, cremello. Well built according to it's breed and well bred I have a foxtrotter that I really like right now and won't be shopping for a while. But I do like to dream and windowshop.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I would take my horse, make his yellow a chestnut but leave his blonde the same (you know how I love me a liver chestnut!) and would make him 2-4 inches taller. He's only 15hh, and I've always wanted a bigger horse, even though tall quarter horses are a little further from the breed standard. That's my perfect horse!
