Cakes, Cats, and Cool Cars

My boy isn't the only one that had a birthday on Tuesday. Paint Girl's OH turned 40. I'm letting him break that year in for me.

The OH helps me out a lot. Like drives me to the feed store to get hay for my horse. He loves brownies and chocolate. So I bought him a piece of chocolate cake. Then I thought it'd be fun to decorate it to look like his black and white Paint mare, Fritzy.

That was an adventure.

But it turned out pretty cute.

I got My Boy some birthday snacks, too. Not only did he get hay and supplement, but he got a ham and a hanging apple treat ball.

I kid, I kid. It's not a ham. Although that is what they looked like when wrapped in plastic and stacked in the box. I thought they were giant ham bones for dogs. Then I noticed they were equine mineral blocks. I don't know if MB will like it.

He will like the hanging treat ball. I haven't had one for him since last summer. He does not eat them in two days like Paint Girl's mares do. He works on them slowly. Maybe he is still perfecting his technique.

Morgan the cat likes to visit us when we are with the horses. Sometimes it scares me, how she runs under their bellies or behind their legs.

She is such a tiny cat. The horses don't seem to mind her and she never startles them. I think that one day, she might leap onto one of their backs. Now that might startle them!

After the trip to the feed store, my hay chauffeur's friend stopped by to show us his new horse. A black mare.

Well, not really. You see, the friend and his wife actually have 5 horses, but this was his new toy. This is horsepower of a different kind. It's a 1966 Chevelle Super Sport.

He is also turning 40.

Hee hee.

  1. WHat a sweet thing to paint up the cake for the OH ! I bet he was pleased. And MB,the treats keep coming.
Cats are cool they seem to know just where to be ,and flit away before they get stomped.

  2. You did a lovely job on that cake! The seed... ball? looks delicious. Do the birds attack it at all?

I liked the black "mare" at the end too. LOL

  3. I think that it was nice that you got the OH a piece of cake!

  4. Sweet car! I'm partial to Chevy's from the 60's.

My horses have never been fans of those ball licks. I may try again though because until this summer they didn't particularly like carrots either.

Where did you get black icing? Kimfer made cow cookies for her boss at Christmas (she works at a dairy). She had to settle for brown and white cows because she couldn't find black.

  5. {Breathe}~ Never had a problem with the birds. The ball hangs from a rope string on a hook, and I don't think they can land and balance on the ball.

{cdncowgirl}~ I bought little frosting gels, they come in tubes that you squeeze out and can write/draw with. The brand was "Cake Mate."

  6. What a cute Birthday cake. That was so nice of you. Paint Girl's OH is really good to you! Morgan is so cute. Some of the cats at the stable do the same thing. Love the car!

  7. Himalayan rock salt is the best though I prefer to feed loose salt rather than solid/block form. It contains something like 82 minerals rather than just a few like the normal blocks.

  8. It was hilarious seeing my OH open the fridge, and I hear him say "What's this?" I said "What?" and he brings it over to show me, but of course I already knew it was there! He really liked it!
And yes, that was one nice car!

  13. Pony Girl!!! You have shared your art abilities in the past, but this...takes the cake (pun intended) - I am serious!!!! I am a painter and I honestly do not think I could draw any horse - especially not a specific horse with CakeMate gels on a small square cake! I really am not kidding around - that was great. It is a shame he had to eat it although I guess it might get gross if left out to admire. I am glad you captured it for all time here on the blog. Well done! I can't remember if I said Happy Birthday to your Boy, but I can just picture him enjoying his new treats! Yummy and gooey! Thanks for sharing the photo of pony and kitty. Very sweet!
Also, I just wanted you to know that you inspired me to enjoy our snow yesterday. I usually don't like it too much, but when I looked out the window yesterday morning, for some reason I thought of you and how much you want snow. I tried to be grateful for it and I took my good camera along to the barn "like Pony Girl" would do! Once there, the sun came out and I had so much fun taking photos and riding! I know this doesn't help you get your snow, but I wanted you to know that you helped me see snow in a different light! Thanks!

  14. A few years ago a friend had professional cookies made for the kids to match their horses - the one you did for OH was WAY better!!! You could have a nice part time income doing that for all the crazy horse people around who would pay big bucks to have food look like their horse.

Turning 40 really is a non-event when you get there so don't worry about it. You are active and healthy and that's what matters - AND you are still challenging yourself by learning and doing new things! Learning to ride saddleseat is one of them but even your "Nikon challenge" counts.

Thanks for your visits to my blog lately too!

  15. I never saw a mineral block like that. We should get some hanging treats for our Girls....
I worry about our cats around the horses, too. They don't seem to understand that they could get stepped on. I have always wanted to be able to ride while holding a cat in front of me in the saddle...

  16. Happy Birthday to your boy! Sweet sixteen with so many more years together with you! My handsome boy turns 15 this spring and then my ole mare will be 35 in May.......Crazy!
    Love the cake!

  17. Love the cake - you are so creative! The mineral rock looks pretty good, I need to think about getting one of those.

  18. Very cute picture of the pony on the piece of cake! I have never seen a treat ball before - what a neat idea! I will have to try making one of those.

  19. Great cake decorating.

Never saw a mineral "block" like that one. And I think my chow hounds would eat the treat ball all at once.

Mr. Fry has a restored 1967 Chevelle.

  20. Sweet gifts all around! Terrific job decorating that brownie. You know when I looked at the photo I believed you and thought "Ham?!" Why I oughta...
We had barn cats and a small beagle that loved our horses. The dog would actually play ball with our mare!

  21. Funny!! Yes, many of the men at our house prefer horsepower to horses!! 40's not so bad, by the way. You get used to it. And, I love what you did with the cake!! Very artistic of you. :)

  22. Lovely post, I love the cake, it looks like Max! My little cat once jumped onto my friend's horse's back. The horse took one step backwards in surprise and then just stood there, it was amazing. The cat settled down for a sleep on the horse's nice warm rug. We went to take a photo but she jumped down before we got a chance.

  23. How freakin' cute!! You are too cool. That green ribbon is to die for also. My cats used to do the same thing around the horses when I lived at Cal Poly's barn. Once, my Oz darted between all four legs of an Arab in her box stall to grab a field mouse. He was outta there before she could figure out what happened! Another time he actually climbed into a saddle that was on the back of an Arab tied in crossties! The cool thing was the horses didn't mind at all! You gotta love animals. Happy birthday to the man!

  26. Cure Cake. What a good friend to do that!
Our horses love the Himalayan salt blocks. The ones we buy have a pre drilled hole to hang them in the stall by. The horses choose that one over the big red one eery time. And Desi loved his oat ball- but it sure made his face a big sticky mess!

  27. I have seen those natural mineral blocks, but have never tried one, let us know how he likes it.

  30. OMG! Juliette's right...Doing a horse is hard PG! You've outdone yourself. That's one thing I stay away from unless I have a pattern to copy when I'm doing a cake. But you did it freehand! Kudo's! Ok, I wanna see a cake! I knew talant ran rampant in this family!!!

  32. LOVE the cupcake! Too cute!
My husband had to come over and check out the "black mare." His Dad's silver and black "mare" (same car, but not restored) is still in our back yard gathering dust...he is finally toying with selling it, although I won't believe it until I see it gone...

Love your blog - happy belated birthday to Your Boy! I love his snip - it looks like he already has a party hat on his sweet nose!

  34. I agree with all the other comments--that cake is AWSUM. But I especially like the ham/mineral lump because when I saw it at first I thought what the heck is that? It looks like a rock! I thought you were going to hone some little piece of jewelry for Your Boy's headstall! But of course, a little yummy salty thing to lick! Hee heee Har Har! Your pictures are so fun--you could work for Life Magazine!!! Or Outside Magazine! or Horse Illustrated! Or National Horseographic!
